When most people think of the Cotswolds, they picture Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water and Broadway – all lovely, but often packed. If you’re after quieter corners, scenic trails and village charm without the crowds, we’ve gathered the best spots to escape into nature and history.
Based near Witney or Northleach? You’re perfectly placed to explore these under-the-radar walks, picnic spots and tucked-away hamlets.
1. Northleach – A Time-Capsule Cotswold Town
Right on your doorstep if you’re staying at our Northleach cottage
Tucked quietly between Cheltenham and Burford, Northleach is one of the Cotswolds’ best-kept secrets. This small medieval town was once a wool-trading hub and still oozes old-world charm, with golden stone streets, vintage shops and a peaceful, local feel.
Don’t miss: The 15th-century Church of St Peter and St Paul (known as the “Cathedral of the Cotswolds”), the Escape to the Cotswolds heritage centre and a handful of independent boutiques and cafés in Market Square. There’s also The Old Prison where you can learn about an 18th Century House of correction and also take advantage of their lovely café.
Eat & unwind: Enjoy a long lunch at The Wheatsheaf Inn or a glass of something lovely at The Curious Wine Cellar.
Walks: Start with a gentle town loop or connect to the Monarch’s Way for a longer countryside ramble.
Stay here: Our Northleach holiday cottage (up a sleepy side street) sleeps up to 3 guests and is full of Cotswold charm – perfect for couples or small families wanting a relaxed base for peaceful walks, scenic drives and spontaneous weekend escapes.
